Jennifer Lopez’s Engagement Rings: Diamonds That Defined Decades
Angelica Frey | August 08, 2023
Over the last three decades, musician, actress, and entrepreneur Jennifer Lopez accrued a considerable jewelry collection, which includes VRAI created diamonds. Her engagement rings have sparked industry-wide trends. While not all of her romantic relationships resulted in marriage, they were all marked by elegant, maximalist engagement rings.
Her marriages include her 1997 wedding to restaurateur Ojani Noa, her 2001 nuptials to choreographer Chris Judd, her 2004 marriage to Marc Anthony, and her 2022 marriage to Ben Affleck. Other significant relationships include her 2002 romance with Ben Affleck, and her relationship with baseball player Alex Rodriguez.
Jennifer Lopez’s engagement rings mostly featured two types of diamonds, namely fancy-colored diamonds, preferably square or rectangular in shape, and Emerald diamonds. If you're looking to propose with an engagement ring you can take inspiration from J Lo's stunning collection.

2002: Pink Diamond Engagement Ring
In November 2002, actor Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez with a 6.1-carat pink diamond from Harry Winston. Its estimated cost is $2.5 million. The pink diamond was a Radiant cut, flanked by two trapezoid side stones, mounted on a rose-gold band. The mystique surrounding this ring caught the attention of Barbra Streisand.
“I met (Streisand) at an Oscar party, years ago, and I was at the time engaged to Ben Affleck and — she’s really into diamonds, which I didn’t know,” Lopez told Apple Music in 2020 during a Zoom chat with Dua Lipa and Charli XCX on Apple Music “So, (Streisand) came up to me, and like, she’s heard of it, and she’s like, ‘Can I see your ring?’ And she asked me about the ring.”This ring sparked the trend and interest, among the general population, in fancy colored diamonds.

Pink Diamonds in History
Pink diamonds, though rare, have existed throughout history. The Grand Mazarin is a 19.07-carat pink diamond mined in Golconda. It was part of the collection of cardinal Mazarin, who, between 1642 and 1661, was the de facto ruler of France. He gifted his collection to King Louis XIV, which went on to constitute the crown jewels. The diamond has a faint, pink hue.
The Williamson Diamond was discovered in the Williamson diamond mine in Tanganyika, and, in its rough state, it was a wedding present to then-Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Once cut, the main diamond was a 23.6-carat Round Brilliant Cut diamond. It has a light, cool-toned pink hue. Frederick Mew of Cartier set it into a flower-shaped brooch in 1952. It was the center of a flower: the petals were studded with Round diamonds, the stalk with Baguettes.
The Martian Pink is a 12.04 intense-pink diamond that shows no secondary hue. It came from the inventory of jeweler Harry Winston. He was so impressed with the 1976 launch of a Mars-bound satellite that he searched for a diamond whose hue would mimic the color of the planet.
2004: Blue Radiant Cut Center Stone Engagement Ring
In 2004, Jennifer Lopez got engaged to singer Marc Anthony. He proposed with a 8.5-carat blue diamond ring from Harry Winston. The center stone is a Radiant diamond, and is flanked by trapezoidal side stones.
About Blue Diamonds
Blue diamonds owe their color to trace amounts of the element boron. There are several storied blue diamonds that made an impact in the history of jewelry and gemology. In the mid 2010s, Blue diamonds became the most sought-after gem at auction, a trend started by the 9.75-carat Zoe Diamond, reported the Diamond Investment and Intelligence Center.
The most famous blue diamond is the Hope Diamond, which was famously rumored to be carrying a curse. It weighs 45.52 carats and was extracted in the 17th century from the Kollur mine in Golconda, India. It was first purchased by French merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, who sold the stone to King Louis XIV of France in 1668. After it was stolen in 1792, the diamond was allegedly cut, and its largest section appeared as the “Hope diamond” in an 1839 gem catalog from the Hope banking family. Harry Winston purchased it in 1949, and then donated it to the Smithsonian Museum in 1958.
The “fancy deep grayish-blue” Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond also comes from the Kollur mine, and it originally weighed 35.56 carats. It now measures 31.06 carats because, in 2010, The New York Times reported that it was recut to enhance its color, clarity, and remove the damage to its girdle. The Wittelsbach-Graff was passed down by Austrian royalty until it was sold at auction in 2008 to Laurence Graff.
2019: Emerald Diamond with Baguette Side Stones on a Platinum Band
In 2019, Alex Rodriguez proposed to Jennifer Lopez with an Emerald engagement wing whose center stone is estimated to be between 12 and 15 carats. Its side stones are tapered baguettes, and the band appears to be platinum.

2022: Green Diamond Engagement Ring
In 2022, after they rekindled their relationship, Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez with a green-diamond engagement ring. The diamond is an 8.5-carat Cushion, and has trapezoid side stones and a platinum band. It comes from Ilan Portugali of Beverly Hills Diamond. "Green has always been my lucky color and now, for sure, it always will be,” she wrote in her newsletter On the JLo (excerpted here by People). She included photos from her camera roll, including a close-up of the jewelry.
About Green Diamonds
Green is the second-rarest color for fancy-colored diamonds, only trumped by red diamonds. The green hue is caused by radiation exposure.
The most notable green diamond is the Dresden Green, whose earliest documentation dates back to 1722. In 1768, it was incorporated in a hat ornament that also comprises two large and 411 small-to-medium diamonds, and it’s still preserved in this setting. It measures 41 carats and has a distinct apple-green hue.
Other famed green diamonds are the 5.03-carat, rectangular-shaped Aurora Green and the 5.50-carat modified Trillion Ocean Dream diamond.
